Build Portfolios
Portfolios let you work with sets of areas rather than one at a time — for comparison, for saving a working selection, and for portfolio-level indicator analysis.
Open the Portfolio Panel
- Switch to Assess mode.
- In the Assessment toolbar, click Portfolio and choose a panel:
- Sites — the current working selection of areas, and the controls for adding to it
- Indicators — area-weighted indices and indicators for that selection (Dashboard analysis)
Both panels stay loaded, so you can color the map by an index on Indicators, switch to Sites to drop a weak area, and come back without losing the map coloring or your place in the site list.
Which saved portfolio you are working on is not one of the panels — it is the portfolio name under each panel's title. If you have set a default portfolio, it loads automatically when the panel opens, unless you already have a selection in progress.
Building a Selection (Sites panel)
One thing to know first: the search box at the top of the Sites panel searches only the sites already in your portfolio. It is there to find a row in a long list, not to discover new areas. Adding areas is a separate control.
Finding Areas to Add
Find areas opens a panel above the site list. Type a term — name, ethnicity, country, and other metadata are all searched — and press the arrow or Enter to apply it. You can layer status or governance type on top from the dropdowns; each applied search or filter becomes a chip you can remove individually.
Applying any criteria highlights the matches on the map and greys out everything else, while keeping the matches visible and clickable so you can still add them by hand. The panel also lists them: use the + beside a result to add one, or Add all to take every match not already in your portfolio. Matches respect the legend's area-class toggles, so anything hidden there is excluded. Closing the panel restores the normal map.
Other Ways to Add
- Click a polygon on the map.
- Search in the header, then use the + button on the result.
- Add areas in view takes every area currently shown on the map in one click. It follows the header's search and filters as well as the legend's area-class toggles, and its button shows how many areas it would add, so the number moves as you pan and filter.
Every add confirms with a notification, including when the area was already in the portfolio.
Managing the List
- Sort by clicking any column header.
- Group by country to collapse the list into per-country sections.
- Tick rows and use Remove site(s) to drop areas.
- Show only portfolio areas hides everything else on the map.
- Export CSV downloads the selection with every index and indicator value.
Newly added areas carry a green dot until you save.
Save a New Portfolio
- Click Save portfolio.
- Enter a name (required) and an optional description.
- Confirm.
Working with a Loaded Portfolio
When a portfolio is loaded, the header shows its name, plus an Unsaved changes badge whenever the working selection differs from what is stored. Both appear on the Sites and Indicators panels alike.
The counters compare your selection against the saved portfolio as sets:
| Counter | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Saved | Areas in the stored portfolio. |
| Added | Areas you have added but not yet saved. |
| Removed | Stored areas you have taken out but not yet saved. |
| Total | Areas in the current working selection. |
Counting Added and Removed separately means that swapping one area for another correctly reads as 1 added and 1 removed, rather than no change at all.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Update portfolio | Overwrites the loaded portfolio with the current selection. Asks for confirmation first. |
| Save as new | Creates a separate portfolio from the current selection, leaving the original untouched. |
With unsaved changes pending, closing the panel, loading another portfolio, or starting a new one will all ask before discarding them.
Switching Portfolios
Click the portfolio name beneath either panel's title to open your saved portfolios. Both panels have it, so you can change sets without leaving whichever one you are reading.
Switch between Mine and Shared with me.
- Click a name to load it. You stay on the panel you were already on.
- The star sets or clears your default portfolio, which then loads automatically.
- The ⋮ menu offers Load, Rename, Duplicate, Share, and Delete. Deleting asks for confirmation and names the portfolio.
- New portfolio at the bottom clears the selection so you can start from scratch, and brings up the Sites panel to build in.
Sharing
Open Share on a portfolio you own, enter a colleague's Atlas email address, and choose an access level:
- Can view — they can load and analyze it
- Can edit — they can also add or remove areas
Shared portfolios appear under Shared with me with a note about who shared them. Only the owner can rename, delete, re-share, or set it as their default; with view-only access, use Save as new to make your own editable copy.
Returning to Single-area Assessment
Switch the Assessment control back to Assess Specific Areas to click individual polygons. Closing the portfolio panel also returns you to single-area mode — see Assess specific areas.
