Assess Specific Areas
Assess mode is where you read the metrics loaded for the map dataset. Enable it from the header mode menu (Review metrics and build portfolios of areas), then choose how you want to work.
Assessment Sub-modes
Once in Assess mode, the header Assessment control switches between three views.
| Sub-mode | Label in UI | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Single-area assessment | Assess Specific Areas | Click areas for per-site metrics. |
| Portfolio | Portfolio | A menu with two panels: Sites to build and manage a selection, and Indicators to analyze it with values that can color the map (Build portfolios, Dashboard analysis). |
| Assessments | Assessments | Areas you are responsible for assessing. |
The rest of this page covers the first of these. Choose Assess Specific Areas to follow along.
From Map to Assessment Card
- Select Assess Specific Areas.
- Click an area on the map.
- The Area Assessment card opens immediately for that feature.
- Use the pillar tabs to review scores, reported on a 0–100 scale where data exists.
Pillar Tabs
| Tab | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Stewardship | Stewardship Index and related notes (PAME for PCAs, CASE for Collective Lands). Often shows No data for this area yet until stewardship metrics are wired up. |
| Integrity | Integrity Index plus indicators such as Forest Cover, Forest Stability, Connectivity, Freshwater, Species Richness, and Biodiversity Importance. |
| Degradation | Degradation Index plus indicators such as Agriculture, Urban Area, Illegal Mining, Active Mining Concession, Active Oil Concession, Roads (500m), Active Hydropower, and Historical Fires. |
| Pressure | Pressure Index plus indicators such as Fire (previous year), Road (10km), Planned Oil, Planned Mining, Planned Hydro, Routes of Integration, and Drought Stress (previous ~5 years). |
Each tab follows the same layout: a short description of the pillar, a headline index bar where one is available, then the underlying indicator bars.
Forest Cover Trend
On the Integrity tab, the Forest Cover row carries a trend control (Forest Cover Trend) whenever historical data exists. Opening it shows a line chart from 1986 through the latest year in the dataset, with a summary giving the current year's percentage and the change since 1986.
Moving Between Metadata and Assessment
The two views are linked in both directions. View Metadata in the assessment footer opens the metadata card for the same area; from metadata in Assess mode, Assessment Data (for existing mapped areas) or Assess Area (for uploaded or new polygons) takes you back. Close the selection from the card header as usual.
Data Source
Integrity, degradation, and pressure scores come from the Atlas metrics tables, keyed by area identifier, and forest cover history comes from per-year forest cover columns. Where an area has no metric row for a pillar, that panel shows No data for this area yet rather than a zero.
In-app Help
The Assess help panel may title this workflow Assess Individual Areas while the toolbar button reads Assess Specific Areas; both refer to this same single-area mode. Search also works here, so you can locate a site before clicking it.
